The wait is over for one of the most anticipated festivals of India, Dussehra 2024, dedicated to Maa Durga and her ultimate victory over pure evil. This year the festival will be celebrated on the 12th of October. The word Dussehra is derived from the world’s oldest language ‘Sanskrit’ also called Devbhasha, in which ‘Dasha’ denotes ‘Ten’ and ‘Hara’ means ‘Defeat’. Also, this day marks the victory of Lord Rama over the 10-headed demon king of Lanka.

Significance of Dussehra

To every Maa Durga devotee across the globe this festival, also known as Vijayadashami, celebrated on the tenth day of Navratri or Shukla Paksha Dashmi, holds great importance. The high significance of this auspicious nine-day festival marks the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, the 10-headed demon king, and the victory of Goddess Durga over demon Mahishasura. Dussehra celebration also marks the upcoming festival of light called Diwali, 20 days before.

Date

As per the Hindu Lunar calendar, the Hindu festival Dussehra falls on the 10th day of Navratri or Shukla Paksha Dashmi. For this year, the 12th of October is chosen to celebrate this holy day and to mark the end of Navratri and the beginning of the wait for Diwali.

History

Dussehra festival denotes the ultimate attainment of good over evil with its two associated stories of Hindu Mythology. One speaks about the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura after a furious battle that lasted nine days. The second one speaks about the victory of Lord Rama over the 10-headed demon king, Ravana, of Lanka.

As per Drikpanchang, “the puja muhurat falls on October 12 from 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM.

Jalebi

Jalebi is one of the most favoured mithai or sweets in India. It tastes mouth-watering when it’s hot and crispy and dipped in chasni or sugar syrup. You can devour this sweet with Dahi or Rabdi to enhance the flavour.

Gulab Jamun

My favourite and the Mango of the Mithai world is Gulab Jamun. Nobody can resist this sweet, which also tastes divine when eaten hot while dipped in sugar syrup. This sweet is so powerful that even a person who doesn’t like sweets much cannot resist it.

Rasgulla

Celebration of any festival is incomplete without this classic Bengali mithai or sweet called Rasgulla. These are soft and spongy while balls melt as soon as they gets inside the mouth, dipped in white sugar syrup or chasni.
