Diwali Snacks Recipes: Balance the Sweetness of this Festive Season

After hogging on so many sweets for the whole day, our taste buds demand something salty and spicy for a chance. So, it is important to prepare some Diwali snacks with these sweets to balance the flavours.

To bring fairness to your platter, here are some of the best Diwali snack recipes of all time that are easy to make at home. Go through each step properly to make the best snacks this Diwali.

1. Murukku Recipe

Murukku is a South Indian dish that is usually confused with a Maharashtrian dish Chakli. The main and only difference between the two is its base ingredients and the recipe to make the best murukku are mentioned below:

  • Roast 5 tablespoons of urad dal to a nice golden brown colour.
  • Cool it down and grind the roasted urad dal into a fine powder.
  • Combine 2 cups of rice flour with this urad dal powder.
  • Add 1 teaspoon of salt, chilli powder, and sesame seeds each, then half a teaspoon of ajwain, and ¼ teaspoon of hing to the rice flour mix.
  • Give it a good mix and add 2 tablespoons of ghee.
  • Mix ghee and then make a moist dough using water.
  • Grease the murukku maker inside out.
  • Heat oil to fry murukku in a kadhai.
  • Create round structures on the back of the spatula and drop them in the hot oil.
  • Maintain the flame on medium-low while frying the murukku.

2. Chakli Recipe

Now that we have learned how to make Murukku, let us see what goes into Chakli. Here is how you can make chakli by following a few simple steps which are mentioned below:

  • Combine 2 cups of besan, 1 teaspoon of ajwain, ¼ teaspoon of haldi, ½ teaspoon of red chilli powder, ½ teaspoon of salt, kasoori methi according to the taste, 1 tablespoon of oil and a pinch of baking soda.
  • Now make a soft dough using water to make chakli.
  • Grease the chakli maker and put the dough in it.
  • Make round chaklis as shown in the image.
  • Once all are ready, heat oil on medium flame and put each chakli in oil.
  • Fry the chaklis on medium flame to cook them from within.

3. Namak Para Recipe

One of the most popular snacks of all time, Namak Para is bound to be prepared during the festive season. To make the most crispy and flaky namak para of all time, please follow the recipe that I am mentioning below:

  • Combine 2 cups of maida, ½ teaspoon of black pepper, 1 teaspoon of ajwain and ½ teaspoon of salt.
  • Mix well, add 5 tablespoons of oil and mix well again.
  • Add water in the mix gradually to knead a relatively hard dough.
  • Knead 1 tablespoon of oil in the dough and knead it properly.
  • Let it rest for half an hour.
  • Roll a piece of dough flat with a thickness between 3 to 4 mm.
  • Cut these into your preferred shape and then fry them on low flame.
  • Fry them for 7 to 8 minutes to get the right crispiness.

4. Poha Chivda Recipe

Poha Chivda is a Maharashtrian snack that is loved by every Indian equally. It is a snack that you start eating once, you wouldn’t know when to stop. Also, you can choose quantity on your own where you can put more of what you like and less of what you don’t. Let us learn how to make such a snack that we can eat til eternity.

  • Sieve poha to separate the fine powder.
  • Heat 1 cup of oil in a kadai.
  • Add one poha to check if the poha is rising to the surface of the oil without turning brown immediately.
  • Once that is ensured, pour poha in the oil as much as it can hold as less oil and more poha won’t give room for poha to puff up.
  • Remove the crispy poha on a kitchen towel or tissue paper.
  • Discard the oil after 3-4 batches as it is unhealthy to resume it.
  • Use 1 tablespoon of roast peanuts, cashew nuts, thin coconut slices and gram dal.
  • Remove these things and put them in the fried poha.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of oil to the existing oil.
  • Fry sliced green chillies, crushed garlic and curry leaves in the oil until crispy.
  • Once the garlic turns golden brown, add cumin seeds into it and let it spatter.
  • Turn off the heat and add hing, red chilli powder, salt, turmeric powder, and jaggery or sugar to the pan.
  • Stir it quickly and let the jaggery or sugar melt.
  • Transfer the mix to the fried poha and start mixing all the ingredients gently.

5. Thattai Recipe

Another South Indian recipe that will be a great snack for you to munch between your sweet tooth cravings is thattai. These are crispy fried disks made of rice and urad dal flavoured with salt and a lot of herbs. Let us see how to make these addictive snacks for this Diwali:

  • Soak 1 tablespoon of chana dal in water for an hour.
  • Roast 1 teaspoon of chana dal and urad dal each, until golden brown.
  • Grind these two dal together and combine with 1 cup of rice flour.
  • Add a pinch of hing, salt and chilli powder to taste.
  • Add sesame seeds if you like.
  • Add soaked chana dal, curry leaves and a tablespoon of butter to this mix.
  • Now mix well and knead a stiff dough using water.
  • Make small balls and flatten them thin on a dry cloth.
  • Fry these thin wafers on medium flame.

6. Aloo Chaat

Aloo Chaat is a delicacy of the Indian streets and it would be a great idea to bring it to your home. This mouthwatering dish offers a burst of flavour in your mouth upon every bite. Let us see how to make these super delicious snacks which made me hungry too:

  • Pour 1 tablespoon of oil into a heavy-based pan.
  • Roast 1 teaspoon of ginger garlic paste and 1 chopped chilli.
  • Add 1 cup of boiled potatoes cut into shape as shown in the image.
  • Fry these potato cuts until they are golden brown.
  • Add ½ teaspoon of cumin powder, salt to taste, 1/8th teaspoon of chat masala, ¼ to ½ teaspoon of chilli powder and mix well.
  • Turn off the heat and let the potatoes cool completely.
  • Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of green pudina chutney, ½ to 3/4th teaspoon of sweet tamarind chutney and mix well.
  • Remove these in a serving dish and add coriander leaves, sev and pomegranate seeds in it.
